Abstract

PURPOSE: Instead of formaldehyde and sodium cyanide, inexpensive and less dangerous glycolonitrile is used to react with an aminoacetonitrile derivative, thus producing high-quality iminodiacetic acid derivative useful as chelating agent.
CONSTITUTION: An aminoacetonitrile derivative of formula I (R1, R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aryl) is hydrolyzed in an aqueous medium with an alkali to convert the nitrile group into carboxyl or its salt. Further, glycolonitrile is added to the reaction mixture to react with the carboxylic acid and the product is hydrolyzed to give iminodiacetic acid derivative of formula II. The process of this invention removes the possibility of the formation of nitrilotriacetic acid which has been inevitable by-product in convention processes, and reduces the discoloration of the reaction mixture.
