Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain hydantoin in high selectivity and yield economically, by reacting an inorganic acid addition salt of glycine nitrile with an alkali metal cyanate in an aqueous medium, and by heat-treating the reaction mixture incorporated with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid.
CONSTITUTION: An inorganic acid addition salt of glycine nitrile of formula I: (Z is HCl or H2SO4) is reacted with an alkali metal cyanate of formula II: (Me is Na or K) in an aqueous medium (usually water) at 0W20°C, and the reactiom mixture is aged for 1W2 hr. OneWtwo moles of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid is added slowly to one mole of the compound of formula I within 1 hr, and the mixture is heat- treated at 70W110°C for 1W4 hr to complete the reaction, thus giving the objective hydantoin.
EFFECT: Few side reactions, easy purification, and extremely slight discoloration of product.
