Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically obtain the titled compound useful as an anti- hypertensive in high yield, by reacting an acetic acid of (R)-2-amino-4-phenyl lactic acid readily available with nitrous acid in the presence of acetic acid alkali metal salt. CONSTITUTION:(R)-2-Amino-4-phenyl lactic acid is used as a raw material and an acetic acid solution thereof is reacted with nitrous acid (e.g., sodium nitrite or potassium nitrite) in the presence of acetic acid alkali metal salt to give (R)-2-acetoxy-4-phenyl lactic acid, which is then hydrolyzed with an acid to provide the aimed compound. The above-mentioned acid hydrolysis is carried out by heating crude (R)-2-acetoxy-4-phenyl lactic acid at 60-100 deg.C while vigorously stirring in a mineral acid from 0.5N to 2N. The heat hydrolysis may be also carried out after directly adding a mineral acid and water to an acetic acid reaction solution of (R)-2-acetoxy-4-phenyl lactic acid.
