Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for a cyan coupler for color photograph inexpensively and in high yield, by hydrolyzing 2,6- dichloro-3,4-dinitroethylbenzene in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:2,6-Dichloro-3,4-dinitroethylbenzene shown by formula I is hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide at 50-200 deg.C for 0.5-10hr to give the aimed substance shown by formula II. The amount of the alkali metal hydroxide used is 2-10mol., preferably 2.5-6mol. based on 1mol. compound shown by formula I. In order to raise purity of the compound shown by formula II, the compound shown by the formula II is distilled or an aqueous solution of an alkali salt thereof is treated with active carbon and purified by acid precipitation.
