Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an aminobenzoic acid compound, easily, in high yield, by neutralizing a nitrobenzoic acid compound in an inorganic base, and reducing the resulted carboxylic acid salt with hydrazine hydrate in the presence of an inexpensive hydrogenation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrobenzoic acid compound of formula I (n is 1 or 2; the aromatic nucleus may have Cl, OH or methoxy group as substituent) is neutralized in an inorganic base such as caustic soda, caustic potash, quick lime, etc. to the carboxylic acid salt, which is reduced with hydrazine hydrate (50W100% concentration) in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc. in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. Raney-Ni, iron powder, iron salt-carbon, ferric oxyhydroxide, etc.) at 40W110°C, pref. 60W90°C to obtain the objective compound of formula II.
