Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a fungicide, in high yield and purity, by reacting 1,4-naphthoquinone with an alkali metal salt of 1,2-dicyano- 1,2-dimercaptoethene in an aqueous medium controlled at a specific pH.
CONSTITUTION: The titled 2,3-dicyano-1,4-dithia-9,10-anthraquinone is prepared by reacting 1,4-naphthoquinone with an alkali metal salt (e.g. Li, Na or K salt) of 1,2-dicyano-1,2-mercaptoethene in an aqueous medium controlled at pH 5.1W5.8, pref. about 5.3. The reaction is carried out at 0W10°C, pref. 0W5°C. The 1,4- naphthoquinone used is fine powder (32 mesh through). If the pH value is out of the above range, the yield becomes poor.
