Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction product from 1,4-naphthoquinone and an alkali metal salt of 1,2-dicyano-1,2-dimercaptoethene is oxidized in a polar solvent with an oxidizing agent to produce the titled substance of high purity.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) with an alkali metal salt of 1,2-dicyano-1,2-dimercaptoethene is conducted in an aqueous medium at 4W7pH and 0W5°C to give 2,3-dicyano-1,4-dithia-9,10-anthraquinone. The reaction mixture including the compound is oxidized in a polar solvent such as alcohol with an oxidizing agent such as ferric chloride at 0W60°C to give the titled substance. NQ used in the reaction is is preferably fine particles of 60 mesh through.
EFFECT: The use of polar solvent prevents the sudden decline of purity and yield caused by change in pH.
USE: A fungicide against bacterial leaf blight in rice plant.
