Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a drug, agricultural chemical, other chemical products, by isolating p-hydroxymandelic acid having extremely high water-solubility as its salt of a metal, e.g., Ca, Mg, Zn, Ni, Cu, Ba, Dc, Ag, or Fe.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing p-hydroxymandelic acid (e.g., a solution of a reaction product of phenol and glyoxylic acid in a basic aqueous medium) is reated with a chloride, hydroxide, or oxide of Ca, Mg, Zn, Ni, Cu, Ba, Cd, Ag or Fe, to give the metal hydroxymandelate, which is isolated.
EFFECT: The titled substance can be isolated simply in high yield.
