Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high purity and yield, economically in an industrial scale, by the liquid-phase oxidation of p-nitrotoluene with oxygen in a saturated carboxylic acid in the presence of an activated cobalt compound catalyst using a specific reaction accelerator.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound is prepared by the liquid-phase oxidation of p-nitrotoluene with oxygen in a saturated carboxylic acid in the presence of an activated cobalt compound catalyst and a reaction accelerator such as paraldehyde. The reaction accelerator is, e.g. paraldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, 2W4C saturated aldehyde, etc. The feeding rate of the reaction accelerator is 0.01W 1mol/hr per 1l of the reaction liquid.
EFFECT: Since the bromine compounds are not used in the reaction, there is no problems such as corrosion of the reactor, inhibition of the reaction with eluted metal, contamination of the product, etc.
