Abstract
PURPOSE: The gas-phase oxidation of acrolein or methacrolein with molecular oxygen at elevated temperature is conducted in the presence of a catalyst of long life to produce both of the titled compounds in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The gas phase oxidation of an unsaturated aldehyde such as acrolein or methacrolein is conducted with molecular oxygen at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst of the formula (X is potassium and/or cesium; aWi are atomic numbers where when a is 12, b is 0.3W5, c is 0.005W5, d is 0.05W5, e is 0.05W5, f is 0W5, g is 0.05W3, h is 0.005W5 and i is 37W89). The conversion of acrolein and the selectivity of methacrolein is increased. Especially, the catalyst containing potassium and/or cesium increases the yield of mathacrylic acid by leaps and bounds.
