PURPOSE: To obtain metacrolein and methacrylic acid with a high conversion, yield, and selectivity, by vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutylene and tert- butanol in the presence of a specific composition of high activity and selectivity as a catalyst at a low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene or tert-butanol or both are catalytically oxidized in the vapor phase with molecular oxygen or a gas containing it in the presence of a catalyst having the composition of formula I: (X is at least one element selected from Sn, Th, Al, Ge, Ni, Fe, Co, K, Rb, Cs, Zn, Ti, Pb, Re, Zr, Cr, and Bi; aWf are atomic ratios of the elements; when a is fixed to 10, b is ≤6 except O, C, is 0.5W10; d and e are ≤3 except 0; f is a value depending on the valences and atomic ratios of other elements, and 35W80), e.g. formulas II, III, and IV, preferably a heteropoly-acid to give the objective compound.
