Abstract

PURPOSE: To lessen the consumption of adsorbent used due to oxidation as much as possible as well as miniaturize a cooler by cooling the adsorbent after being heated and regenerated by bringing it into contact with a low-temperature inert medium.
CONSTITUTION: Waste gas from a boiler 6 is introduced into an adsorber 10, where SOx present in the waste gas is adsorbed and removed by an adsorbent from a carbonizer 24 and the waste gas so treated is released from a line 12. The SOx- adsorbed adsorbent is sent to a desorption apparatus 14 provided with a heating tube 61 for regeneration by heating. The high-temperature adsorbent so regenerated is brought into contact with an inert substance, e.g., sand, under enclosed condition in a cooler 70 for cooling, separated from the inert substance in a separator 73, and then again returned through a line 71 to the adsorber 10. The high-temperature inert substance is cooled in a heat exchanger 80, and then again returned through a line 71 to the cooler 70. SOx generated in the desorption apparatus 14 is sent through a line 38 to a sulfur recovery process.
