Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a metallic coated layer which undergoes not change in quality and is tightly seal-bondable with low m.p. metallic solder by continuously passing a drawn optical fiber through the optical fiber passing hole of the tip of a feeding pipe protruded from the side of a crucible.
CONSTITUTION: A base material 1 for an optical fiber is softened by heating with a heating furnace 2 and drawn, and the resulting optical fiber 3 having a small diameter is continuously passed through the passing hole 6 of a material feeding pipe 5 protruded from the side of a crucible 4 packed with a metallic coating material 9 such as Al, an Al alloy or an Sn alloy. The material 9 is melted by moderate heating with a heating furnace 8 set around the crucible 4, and the fiber 3 is passed through the hole 6. While keeping the height of the surface of the molten material 9 contant, the fiber 3 is drawn from the hole 6 at a constant rate with a coiling bobbin 10. Thus, the outside of the fiber 3 is uniformly coated with a metallc coat having a prescribed thickness to manufacture a coated optical fiber 3'.
