Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a metal layer having an arbitrary thickness to the surface of an optical fiber, at a low cost, by applying a volatile dispersion containing fine metal powder to the surface of the optical fiber immediately after spinning, and heating the optical fiber to evaporate the volatile solvent and to sinter or melt the fine metal powder.
CONSTITUTION: The optical fiber perform 11 is spun in the spinning furnace 13 to the optical fiber having desired diameter, and passed through the metal-film coating die 15 placed just below the spinning furnace 13 and containing a volatile dispersion of fine metal powder having a diameter of about 1μ, e.g. an ethyl alcohol dispersion 14. The optical fiber 12 is coated with the alcohol dispersion containing the metal powder during the passage through the die. The fiber 12 is subsequently passed through the metal coating furnace 16, in which the alcohol is evaporated and the fine metal powder is sintered or molten to form the metal layer to the surface of the optical fiber 12.
