Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a high strength optical fiber having a uniform coat by applying an atomized resin composition to the surface of an optical fiber immediately after melt spinning.
CONSTITUTION: Optical fiber base material 1 attached to base material feeder 2 is slowly put into heating furnace 3, heat softened, and spun into optical fiber 4. On the other hand, a resin composition based on nitrocellulose, melamine resin and butyl acetate is supplied to passing hole 8 of each coating unit 5, atomized, and spouted with a jet stream of a compressed gas fed through gas passing hole 9. This atomized resin composition is uniformly applied to the surface of fiber 4 immediately after spinning and dried in drying furnace 6 to form a plastic coat. Fiber 4 is then coiled round coiler 7.
