Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify the coating process, enhance the mass-productivity and reduce the apparatus in size by applying a liq. resin composition to an optical fiber immediately after spinning, drying the composition, and coating the fiber with a resin pipe having 2-layer structure.
CONSTITUTION: Base material 1 for an optical fiber is slowly put into heating furnace 3 with base material feeder 2 and spun into optical fiber 4. A liq. resin composition is applied to fiber 4 with applicator 5 and dried with drying furance 6 or cooled to form a primay coat. Fiber 4 is then passed through resin pipe 9 having 2- layer structure and slowly put into heating furnace 8 with pipe feeder 7. By bringing heat softened pipe 9 into close contact with fiber 4 with press rollers 10, fiber 4 is coated. Coated fiber 4 is cooled with cooling vessel 11 and coiled with coiler 12. Inner layer 9a of pipe 9 is made of soft polymer, and outer layer 9b of thermoplastic resin.
