Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an optical fiber having excellent workability in connecting operation, by using, as the first coating material, a polymer having poor adhesivity to both glass and the second coating material.
CONSTITUTION: The optical fiber preform 1 is introduced slowly into the electrical furnace 3 by the preform feeder 2, heated, soften, and spun to an optical fiber 4. The optical fiber 4 is passed through a pipe 5 made of e.g. the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The optical fiber 4 is coated with the resin pipe 5 heated and softened with the heater 6, passed through the cooling zone 7 and wound with the winder 8. The coating layer of the optical fiber thus manufactured can be easily removed by mechanical means. The thickness of the first coating layer is ≤50μm, esp. ≤10μm. The material of the pipe 5 is generally a thermoplastic resin containing C and H, C and F, or C, H and F as the constituent elements.
