Abstract
PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of cracks, to improve the quality of ingots and to stabilize operation in vertical type continuous casting by bringing dummy bar pinch rolls into contact with the ingot with weak pressurizing forces. CONSTITUTION:In the operation of a vertical type continuous casting machine, the cylinder pressure on the ingot pressing side of oil hydraulic cylinders is changed over to low pressure according to ingot sizes or the like, at the point of the time when the ingot 3 drawn from the inside of a mold 2 arrives at the positions of dummy bar pinch rolls 5, 5'. Thereby, the weak pressurizing forces of the extent of not compressing the ingot 3 bring the rolls 5, 5' into contact with the ingot and hold these. According to this method. the roll 5, 5' can play the role of guide rollers and therefore the ingot 3 is prevented from bending and cambering and also the ingot 3 is prevented from disengaging from the head part of the dummy bar. Hence, it is possible to suppress the bulging of the ingot and to suppress its cracking considerably.
