Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the graphite dispersion type sintered sliding material having sufficient strength and excellent sliding characteristics, by specifying the composition of the base material for the sintered sliding material and further by enlarging the particle size of free graphite coarse particles.
CONSTITUTION: The base material is one compound of ferrite, ferrite plus pearlite or pearlite which comprises 0.05W1.0wt% P, 0.3W12wt% at least one element of Mn, Ni, Cu and Sn and the remainder of Fe and inevitable impurities. 1W15wt% free graphite coarse particles having a particle size of 100W32 mesh are dispersed in the base material. At first, an intermetallic compound between P and the above-mentioned Mn, etc. is prepared and then the powder of the compound together with the natural graphite powder having the above-mentioned particle size is mixed with powdered iron raw material. The mixture is molded into a green compact and then is sintered. In this process, the above-mentioned intermetallic compound forms a liquid phase, diffusing rapidly into the inside of iron particles. In particular, P diffuses readily, enhancing bonding strength between iron particles and the base material is markedly strengthened by the effect of solid solution. Further, the above-mentioned structure can be obtained by the selection of a proper sintering condition. Further because the graphite is not covered by the plastic flow of the base material, the sliding characteristics of the sliding material can be ensured.
