Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a high performance R2M17 type bond magnet of a low rare earth element content and with a high filling rate by mixing a binder into a rare earth intermetallic cpd. consisting of a rare earth element R, Co, Cu, Fe and other transition metal.
CONSTITUTION: A rare earth intermetallic cpd. is melted which is represented by the formula (where R is a rare earth element, 0<u≤0.20, 0.01≤v≤0.60, 0.005≤ w≤ 0.05 and 6.5≤z≤8.8), e.g. Sm[Co0.68Cu0.12Fe0.18Ta0.02]6.98. The resulting ingot is then homogenized at 1100W1250°C for 1W200 hr, aged at 400W900°C for 0.5W5 hr, and pulverized to a grain size of 500W2 μ. This powder is mixed with below 5 vol% of a binder resin such as bisphenol type epoxy resin or a binder metal or alloy with a m.p. below 400°C, and the mixt. is molded to obtain a permanent magnet material.
