Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the high manganese steel having a small thermal expansion coefficient at and near a normal temperature, by having Ti, Ta, V, Zr, Nb and the like contained in a steel containing 18W35% Mn.
CONSTITUTION: The high manganese steel comprising the basic components of 0.4% or less C, 2.5% or less Si, 10W40% Mn and 0.1W10% Mo, at least one element of 10% or less each Ti, Nb and V and 5% or less each Ta, Zr, W and Hf and the remainder of substantially iron. Mo results in a smaller thermal expansion coefficient and besides improves remarkably toughness and stress corrosion cracking resistance, but when the content of Mo is larger than 10%, the hot workability of the alloy is deteriorated and the toughness is also deteriorated due to the deposition of a metallic carbide when welded. Ti or Hf results in a reduced thermal expansion coefficient, but its excessive amount results in deterioration in hot workability and weldability due to carbide deposition.
