Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent excessive cooling and shorten the time of warming-up, by enabling the drive of a water pump independently of the rotation of an engine to reduce the water supply of the pump when the temperature of the engine is below a set level. CONSTITUTION:A water pump 7 is installed in a cooling water passage 2 extending through a water jacket provided in the cylinder block 4 and cylinder head 5 of an engine 1. The pump 7 is driven with a belt 10 by an electric motor 11, the drive of which is regulated by a controller 9 on the basis of the output of a temperature sensor 12 which detects the temperature of the engine 1. When the temperature of the engine is not higher than a set level, the rotational frequency of the motor 11 is controlled to keep that of the pump 7 at a prescribed low value. When the temperature of the engine 1 is higher than the set level, the rotational frequency of the electric motor 11 is controlled to equalize that of the pump to a prescribed high value. According to this constitution, the engine 1 is prevented from being excessively cooled when its temperature is low.
