Abstract

PURPOSE: A fluorescent substance exhibiting high luminance even with a large electronic current without variation in fluorescent color, which is prepd. by adding a limited ant. of erbium to a europium-activated yttrium or gadolinium oxysulfide fluorescent substance.
CONSTITUTION: A fluorescent substance of the formula (wherein M is at least a rare earth element selected from Y and Gd; 0.02≤x≤0.06; 2.2×10-6≤y≤5× 10-5). It is possible to give excellent electric current characteristics without variation in fluorescent color by the coexistence of Er. Because Er used as one component of the raw material is present in a very. small amt. as compared with the other components, homogenization is difficult by physical mixing, so that said fluorescent substance is easily obtd. by first dissolving these raw materils in a nitric acid soln., coprecipitating each rare each element as the oxalate with addition of oxalic acid, calcining the coprecipitate into the oxide and compounding the coprecipitated rare earth oxide with sulfur and a flux, followed by calcination and washing.
