Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a phosphor having an increased particle diameter and improved fluorescent brightness, by decomposing, by heating, a coprecipitated compound of oxalates of yttrium and europium, adding an alkaline earth metal borate to the resulting mixture and firing the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A europium-activated yttrium oxide phosphor is produced by adding 0.5W15% of an alkaline earth metal borate compound to an yttrium europium compound prepared by heat-decomposing at a relatively low temperature, a precipitate obtained by mixing an acidic aqueous solution of yttrium and europium with an aqueous solution of oxalic acid, and firing the resulting product in an oxidizing atmosphere. The use of below 0.5wt% of the alkaline earth metal borate compound has little effect on increasing the particle diameter of the yttrium europium oxide phosphor. And the use of more than 14wt% lowers fluorescent brightness and so, the product is not suitable as a phosphor used in high efficiency fluorescent lamps.
