Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a tough alloy having a fine hard phase, by dispersing homogeneously in a matrix composite carbides or carbonitrides of W and Mo having a specified grain diameter and constituting a hard phase with a specified crystal structure which is combined to a specified quantity of iron family metals.
CONSTITUTION: The present alloy includes, as a main component, a hard phase consisting of one or more of composite carbides or carbonitrides of Mo and W that are the compounds of the MC type (wherein M represents a metal and C represents C) whose crystal structure is a simple hexagonal type. The average grain diameter of this hard phase is up to 0.5μ preferably in the order of 0.1W 0.3μ, and the grains are bonded with 1W60wt% of an iron family metal, and one homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. Thus an alloy having a fine grain hard phase can be produced which would not be obtained in the prior WC-base alloy. The proportion of Mo in the metal portion in the hard phase is 5W95mol%, and 30mol% or below thereof can be replaced by at least one of Cr and metals of IVa, and Va groups in the periodic table.
