Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a rotary cutting tool of extra fine grained hard alloy by a method wherein a specified amount of iron group metal is bonded to a compound carbide or carbonitride of Mo and W having a specified particle diameter and constituting a hard phase of a specified crystal structure, and is uniformly dispersed into the matrix.
CONSTITUTION: The main constituent of the alloy is a hard phase which consists of at least one compound carbide or carbonitride of Mo and W, having a simple hexagonal crystal structure and being an MC (M is a metal, C is carbon) type compound. The hard phase has an average particle diameter of not larger than 0.5μ, preferably about 0.1W0.3, is bonded by 1W60wt% of an iron group metal and is uniformly dispersed into the matrix. In the hard phase, Mo acounts for 5W95mol% of the metallic part, and up to 30mol% of the metallic part can be replaced by at least one selected from the group consisting of Group IVa metals, Group Va metals and Cr. A rotary cutting tool excellent in strength is produced from the extra fine grained hard alloy thus obtained.
