This operated value indicates the change of roll profile of contact part of rolled stock of vertical rolls 14, 15 due to wear of roll and thermal expansion. A roll opening arithmetic device operates the true roll opening from preset distances L1, L2, l0, diameters d1, d2, detected values l11, l12, inputted from the first detectors 41, 42, detected values l31, l32 inputted from the third detectors 49, 50 and the operated value inputted from the roll profile arithmetic device. Accordingly, errors in detection of roll opening due to elastic deformation of a edger housing 11, compressive elastic deformation of vertical roll chocks 12, 13 etc., deflection of vertical rolls 14, 15 etc. are eliminated perfectly.
