CONSTITUTION:The gate closes only when the rolling stock bite detector detects a metal-off state, and detected values l21, l22 by the second detectors 47, 48 are transmitted to a roll diameter arithmetic device. The roll diameter arithmetic device operates the diameter d1 of contact part of the rolled stock at the time of metal-off of a vertical roll 14 and the diameter d2 of a vertical roller 15 from the detected values l21, l22 and the distance d0. The calculated values d1, d2 operated by the roll diameter arithmetic device are stored in a storage device and made to the latest values at the time of metal-off. Thus, grasping of roll profile of vertical rolls 14, 15 due to latest wear and thermal expansion is made possible.
