Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber holding the quality at an increased fiber drawing speed while simplifying the coating process by applying thermoplastic elastomer to the surface of a fiber immediately after drawing a base material into the fiber. CONSTITUTION:A base material is drawn into a fiber, and thermoplastic elastomer melted by heating or dissolved in an org. solvent is applied to the surface of the fiber immediately after the drawing to manufacture a coated optical fiber. Since the long-term reliability of an optical fiber in strength is affected by the surface state of the fiber, especially by the water resistance, to apply a method of treating the surface of an optical fiber immediately after spinning with a treating agent contg. a compound forming a chemical bond together with a silanol group is effective in improving the quality of the fiber. Especially effective thermoplastic elastomer for coating the optical fiber includes polystyrene-polybutadiene and polypropyleneethylene.propylene rubber.
