Abstract
PURPOSE: A thin film with a hole on the center is made to float on the surface of a liquid synthetic resin in a vessel for applying the resin to optical bibers. Then, the vessel is made to revolve at high speeds and optical fibers are passed through the above hole, thus forming void-free coating layer of synthetic resin on the optical fibers.
CONSTITUTION: Thin film 18 is made to float on the surface of synthetic resin liquid 6 and optical fibers 3 are passed through the center, then into liquid synthetic resin 6, thus minimizing the contact of the liquid resin 6 directly with the air. Vessel 8 is made to revolve at a high speed around the axis of optical fibers to cause convection current in the liquid resin and the axis of optical fibers to coincide automatically with the hole on the center of the thin film. Even when the taking-up speed of the optical fibers is raised near to 100 m/min and the depression of the surface of liquid becomes steep and the bubbles come into the liquid resin, the bubbles are never accompanied with fibers to the end of the applicator because the liquid is stirred, thus forming viod-free coating layers.
