Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve the assurance of good transmission characteristics and the improvement of workability by coating the optical fiber cores, unit by unit, by soft material. CONSTITUTION:At the time of connecting optical fiber cores, optical fiber units 4, 4' are beforehand coated with soft materials 3, 3', such as vinyl pipes, and the optical fiber units 4, 4' having been coated with the soft materials 3, 3' are inserted into the grooves 5, 5' on a bobbin 1 for treating extra core lengths of optical fibers. The connection of the optical fiber cores is then done by a known method and after the connection is finished, the connection parts are contained in an optical fiber core connection containing part 6 and the extra core length parts 9, 9' of the optical fiber units 4, 4' having been coated with the soft materials 3, 3' are wound on the bobbin 1. As a result of this, the exertion of side pressure upon the crossing parts 8, 8' of the respective optical fiber units 4, 4' is obviated by the soft materials 3, 3' and since pulling of the optical fiber cores does not occur, good transmission characteristics are assured and the workability is improved by the integral treatment of the units.
