Abstract
856,069. Making cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 1, 1959 [May 8, 1958], No. 14722/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A cable is sheathed by drawing a portion of the core into a metal tube, reducing the tube on to the core, drawing a remaining portion of the length of the core into a further tube, joining the proximal ends of the two tubes and reducing the second tube on to the core. The first tube is laid out and a length of core drawn into it, e.g. by use of a solenoid and shuttle; this portion of cable is then drawn through a die or swaging machine to reduce the sheath on to the core, preferably producing a corrugated sheath and the partially sheathed cable is then wound on to a drum. A second tube is laid out and the unsheathed length of core is drawn into it until the ends of the two tubes meet when they are welded and the second tube is then also reduced on to the core. If two tubes are not sufficient to sheath the whole length of core further lengths of tube may be added by repeating the second part of the process. According to the Provisional Specification the ends of the tubes are joined after reduction on to the core. Specification 29028/ 1913 is referred to.
