Abstract

627,793. Cable-making machines. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., and HOLLINGSWORTH, P. M. May 29, 1947, No. 14316. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXII] A metallic sheathing is applied to a cable core by threading the core into a previously formed tube of the required metal having a larger diameter than that of the finished sheathing and then reducing the tube to the required diameter, the core being threaded into the tube by attaching one end of the core to an element inserted in one end of the tube, and effecting relative longitudinal movement between the tube and an outer element, the outer element serving to retain the inner element against longitudinal movement, thus drawing the inner element and core into the tube. The tube is wound off a drum 1, through a straightening machine 2 and a solenoid 3. The cable core is passed from a drum 40 through a tubular extension 44 of a towing carriage 39 and attached to an armature which is placed in the end of the tube. The tube is then connected to the extension 44 and the carriage 39 operated to lay the tube out in trough 15. The magnetic device 3 serves to draw the core into the tube, as described in Specification 627,815. After the required length of tube has been laid out it is severed in front of the device 3 and the core disconnected from the armature. The cable is then drawn back through a sinking die 25 and on to a reel 29 at the same time drawing the carriage 39 back to its starting position.
