Abstract

743,819. Cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 22, 1954 [Sept. 23, 1953], No. 26251/53. Class 36. [Also in Group XXII] In a method of sheathing a cable body by drawing it by a tow-line into an oversize tube and then reducing the diameter of the tube to elongate it and cause it to fit the cable body, the tow line 9 is threaded through a long, air-tight pipe 3 and is held at one end and connected at the other to a piston 11 which is inserted in the leading end of tube 1 and held stationary by pressure in the pipe 3 while the tube 1 is drawn over the piston into the pipe. The free end of the pipe 3, through which the tube 1 enters, is closed in an airtight manner, the opposite end terminating in an air-tight chamber 4 which is connected to pipe 5 closed by gland 6. After tube 1 has been drawn into pipe 3 the piston is removed from the tow line, which is then used to draw the cable body into the tube 1. The tube 1 and the cable body are then attached together at the free end of pipe 3 and drawn through a reducing die. Compressed air is fed to the pipe 3 from a container sufficiently large to ensure a supply of air at the pressure required to hold the piston 11 stationary and to compensate for any small leakages in the system. A skid wire may be applied to the tube 1 as it is drawn into the pipe 3, a winding head being provided adjacent the free end of the pipe for this purpose, and for unwinding the wire from the tube 1 on to a reel as the tube is withdrawn from the pipe for the drawing down process, the speed of rotation of the winding head being regulated by a device which frictionally engages the tube (see Group XXII).
