Abstract

1444245 Fitting grommets to cables BICC Ltd 17 Sept 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 43694/73 Heading F2S Apparatus for applying a grommet G to the end of a cable C comprises retractable means 1 for initial support of the grommet; an elongate grommet-expander 2; an elongate tubular member 4, the expander 2 and the tubular member 4 being initially positioned on opposite sides of the retractable support means 1; retractable means (not shown) for providing movement of the expander 2 towards and into contact with the tubular member 4 in such a way that the grommet G is lifted from the retractable support means 1 during the movement; retractable means 3 for effecting movement of a grommet G carried on the expander 2 in such a way as to transfer it on to the tubular member 4; and retractable means 7 for effecting movement of a grommet mounted on the tubular member 4 in such a way as to push it on to a cable C which has previously been threaded through the tubular member 4. The tubular member 4 and the retractable means 7 may be mounted on a body 5 which is pivotable about an axis normal to the axis of the tubular member 4 to permit easy insertion of the cable C. The tubular member 4 and the retractable means 7 may be duplicated on the body 5 in a side-by-side arrangement, which, with a duplication of the retractable support means 1, the expander 2 and the retractable means 3, allows grommets G to be applied simultaneously to both ends of a folded cable. The body 5 may include a chamber 12 to which compressed air is connected at 18 to cause reduced pressure in a bore 6 and hence a current of air into the free end of the tubular member 4 to assist insertion of the cable C. There may be means of automatically applying lubricant to the expander 2 and adhesive to the cable C. The description refers to an automatic machine incorporating the apparatus whereby the various movements are controlled in sequence and the grommets are fed from a hopper.
