Abstract

698,045. Making electric conductors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 6, 1951 [Nov. 7, 1960], No. 27228/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Apparatus for cable sheathing by the method wherein a cable body is drawn into a length of pipe by a tow-line 17 and the pipe is then drawn down to fit the cable, comprises a support having two parallel runways 1, 2, each capable of supporting a pipe length 16, 21 and associated with a side a or b of a reversible double rope haulage 3, having driving means 4, controlled from the near end of the support, the haulage serving for drawing pipes on to said support and simultaneously performing another operation, and equipment, 8 for the supply of pipe and cable bodies and 9 for the take-up of cables, a reducing device 14 for the pipes and drawing off gear 10 for the cable, all located at the near end of the support. The runways are provided with rollers and may be curved, with vertical piperetaining rollers at the inside of the curves. A pipe length 16 is drawn on to the support through the straightening device 14 by attachment to the hawser 3, and then clamped at the near end. The tow line 17, passed through the pipe by blowing the plunger 18 therethrough, is attached to the hawser side b and the cable body is drawn into the pipe by driving the hawser. When the cable body is wholly within the pipe, the near end of the cable body and pipe is attached to a pulling device and drawn through the die 14 by the capstan 10, at the same time as a new length of pipe 21 attached to the hawser side a is being drawn on to runway 1. Alternatively the new pipe length 21 may be drawn on to the support during the rewinding of the tow line 17 on to its spool, after the drawing down of the pipe 16 has left the line extended along the support. Winding in of the line, which is left attached at one end to the hawser drives the hawser and draws on the pipe 21. Specifications 698,043 and 698,044, [Group XXVIII], are referred to.
