Abstract
702,205. Sheathing electric cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 21, 1951 [Feb. 22, 1950], No. 4590/50. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] Drawing.-Metal sheathed cables are made by drawing a length of pipe 1, sufficient to make more than one cable length, through a straightening die 6 on to a support 4, 5, pulling a cable core 13, or a number of cable cores joined end to end, into the pipe 1 by means of tow line 9 until the end of a core is near the forward end 14 of the pipe, then drawing the forward end of the pipe through a reducing die 17 until one core has been sheathed, when the pipe is severed at the cable end, if necessary a further length of core is drawn into the pipe, and the process repeated to manufacture one or more additional cables from the same length of pipe. An indicating device may be arranged at the point of attachment of the tow line 9 to the core 13, and also between the lengths of core when more than one is initially drawn into the pipe. If this device is a piece of magnetic material, a detecting coil is arranged around the pipe near to the die 17 and connected to a galvanometer which indicates the current generated in the coil by the passage of the magnetic material through it, thus indicating when the end of a length of core is passing through the die so that the pipe may be severed at the correct point. Specifications 698,043 and 698,044, [Group XXVIIIL are referred to.
