Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound of high purity and quality and high thiol group formation ratio with a slight offensive smell components, by reacting a polyhydric alcohol with a lower alkyl ester of a mercaptocarboxylic acid, and dehydrating the reaction product after the completion of the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyhydric alcohol, e.g. trimethylolethane, having 3W6 hydroxyl groups in the molecule is reacted with (B) a lower alkyl ester of a mercaptocarboxylic acid expressed by the formula HS-R1-CO2R2 (R1 is 1C or 2C alkylene; R2 is 1W4C alkyl) in the presence of water in an amount of 0.1W100 equivalents, preferably 1W10 equivalents, based on the component (B) at 50W160°C, and the dehydration is carried out during the advance and/or the completion of the reaction to give the aimed compound. A mercaptocarboxylic acid in an amout of 80wt% or less may be contained as the component (B).
USE: A curing agent for epoxy resins.
