Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a novel substituted phenolic resin having transparency and improved storage stability containing a reduced amount of the unreacted material, without requiring the base removing step, by reacting a substituted phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic potassium compound.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A substituted phenol, e.g. p-octylphenol, is subjected to addition reaction with (B) formaldehyde in the presence of (C) a basic potassium compound, e.g. potassium t-butoxide. The reaction system is acidified by addition of (D) an acide, e.g. phosphoric acid, without eliminating the component (C) and thereafter the condensation reaction is carried out to give the desired resin.
EFFECT: Treatment of organic solvents is unnecessary due to the absence of the base removing step, and the amount of the waste water is reduced.
