Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the expansion as well as the increase in the internal resistance of a nonaqueous battery by mixing manganese dioxide used as a positive active material for the battery with cadmium oxide, before the mixture is treated with heat. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 5 is placed over the inner bottom of a case 1, with a current collecting body 6 made of titanium interposed between the case 1 and the electrode 5. A separator 7 and a liquid holding material 8 are provided over the positive electrode 5. A negative electrode 4 made of lithium is pressed and fixed to the inner wall of a sealing plate 2, with a grid 3 interposed between the plate 2 and the electrode 4. The case 1 is sealed by means of the sealing plate 2 with a gasket 9 interposed between the case 1 and the plate 2, and the whole constitutes a nonaqueous electrolyte battery. The positive electrodes 5 is obtained by molding a positive mixture, which is prepared by mixing thermally treated manganese dioxide used as a positive active material with a conductive material and a binding agent made of a fluorine resin, into disclike form. The former magnanese dioxide used as the active material of the positive mixture is prepared by adding preferably 0.5-5mol% of cadmium oxide to manganese dioxide, before the mixture is subjected to heat treatment. The former heat treatment is preferred to be carried out at 300-450 deg.C.
