Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a melt-sticking connection method whose connection loss is low by connecting cores by melt-sticking after uniting the axial centers of cores and operating the holders of optical fibers while heating the melt-stuck part so that the cores are arranged straightly. CONSTITUTION:Single mode optical fibers A1 and A2 to be connected are set on holders 1 and 2 and these connecting ends 3 and 4 are opposed by separating them only by a slight space. While monitoring the light transmitted through the fibers with a light source 5 such as a semiconductor laser and a light detector 6, the axial centers of cores B1 and B2 are united by controlling the positions of connecting ends 3 and 4. The connecting ends 3 and 4 are arc welded with a pair of electrodes 7 and 8. In order to compensate the curve of cores B1 and B2 in melt-stuck part C, arc is generated again on the melt-sticking part with the pair of electrodes 7 and 8 to heat the welding part and the optical fiber A1 or A2 are moved slightly to the horizontal or vertical direction. Since the curve of cores can be compensated by the above-mentioned procedure, melt-sticking connection with low connection loss is made available.
