Abstract
PURPOSE:To narrow the high temp. region of butted parts and to prevent the occurrence of self-aligning effect by providing heat resistant shielding plates having through-holes throttling an electric discharge beam between a pair of electric discharge electrodes to an optical fiber melt sticking and connecting device. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 4, 5 which are stripped of the cladding in the leading end parts are respectively supported by fixing bases 6, 7, and the end faces of the leading ends of the fibers 6, 7 are butted by aligning core parts 4a, 5a with guides 8, 9. Thence, the butted fibers 5, 6 are melt-stuck and connected by the electric discharge beam generated between electric discharge electrodes 10 and 11. The electric discharge beam generated at this time is throttled by passing through the through-holes 12a, 13a of the shield plates 12, 13 provided between said electrodes. The throt tled and fined electric discharge beam can be made narrower of the width in thehigh temp. region at which the butted parts are melt-stuck as compared to the case when there are no shielding plates.
