Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove flaws on optical fiber surfaces and obviate the decrease in the mechanical strength of the fibers at the connection part by subjecting the entire part of the primary covering removed part of the fibers to heat treatment after the fusion weld connection. CONSTITUTION:Two fibers 1, 1' to be connected mutually are fixed to stationary reference planes 2, 2' and are aligned of the axes in the connection part and are then connected through fusion welding under heating with fusion-welding discharge electrodes 3, 3' or CO2 laser light radiation or heating means such as electric heaters, after which the surfaces of the optical fibers other than the connection part having been removed of the primary coverings are reheated by discharge plasma by auxiliary electrodes 5, 5', or other CO2 laser light radiation or another electric heaters or the like, thence a melting agent is coated on the fiber surfaces immediate after this and is heated, whereby the primary covering is formed.
