CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 3a-3e and optical fibers 4a-4e which are exposed by removal of coatings of multicore optical fiber cables 1 and 2 are arranged on V grooves 9 of jigs 7 and 8, and respective connection end faces are heated and shaped by the arc discharge between discharge electrodes 13 and 14. Optical fibers 3a-3e and optical fibers 4a-4e facing to each other respectively are butted with their optical axes matched to each other respectively, and butt parts are heated and melted with a proper butt pressure applied by the discharge between discharge electrodes 13 and 14, thus connecting multicore fiber cables with high precision of the optical axis and a small connection loss.
