Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible welding of all fibers nearly simultaneously even with a small power source and obtain the connection parts of good optical transmission characteristics free from any inclination and distortion of the weld zones by letting plural pairs of discharge electrodes opposing to optical fibers subsequently discharge. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 3-1 thru 3-n having exposed by being removed of the covering resins 4 near the connection parts 5 of optical fiber cables 1, 2 are inserted and aligned in the V-grooves 7 of jigs 6, 6' and are butted together, after which they are pressed in the arrow P direction. Next, the high voltage being generated by a power source 10 is distributed to the discharge welding electrodes 8, 8' provided in opposition to the fibers 3-1 thru 3-n by a distributor 9, whereby discharge is caused subsequently and repeatedly. When this discharge is set at about several to some ten milliseconds, the discharge becomes as if all the electrodes are simultaneously charging and this results in that all the optical fibers are heated and welded virtually simultaneously.
