PURPOSE:To make possible the automation of fusion-welding connection operation throuth discharging with ease by easily and correctly adjusting the relative positions with electrodes later even without placing optical fibers first in the accurate positions in V-grooves. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 142 to be connected are put in V-grooves 16, are roughly butted near the front faces of electrodes 96, 112 and are fixed by retaining means. Next, while one optical fiber 132 is being held by the retaining means, it is slided in the V-groove 16 to butt the both fibers 142, 132. Thereafter electrodes 96, 112 are moved and brought to just beside the butt portion of the optical fibers 142, 132. After this, the fusion-welding connection of the optical fibers 142, 132 is automatically performed.
