Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an alcohol component of a useful pesticide, directly, in one step, in high yield, by heating a furancarbinol compound in water or in an aqueous solvent containing a small amount of organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The furancarbinol compound of formulaI(R1 is ≤6C cycloalkenyl group) is heated in an aqueous solvent in the presence or absence of pref. a metal salt such as magnesium chloride as a catalyst and/or a surface active agent, at pref. 20W200°C, esp. 80W180°C to obtain the compound of formula II. The pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 3W8 with an acid such as inorganic acid, e.g. sulfuric acid or organic acid, e.g. acetic acid, and a base such as an alkali metal, e.g. sodium. The amount of the aqueous solvent is 0.5W 100pts.wt. pref. 5W80pts.wt. per 1pt. of the compound of formulaI.
