Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title starch or its alkali salt, by precipitating carboxymethyl starch (CMS) from its aqueous solution in the presence of a silicate to convert CMS into a neadily separable form without degrading the original characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: Carboxymethyl starch (CMS) or its alkali salt is precipitated from its aqueous solution in the presence of a water-soluble or water-dispersible silicate. As for the silicate, water glass, particularly a silica sol formed in situ by reaction with an acid is preferred. The amount of the silicate is 0.5W20wt% based on CMS. Preferably, a water-miscible nonreactive organic solvent is added to the aqueous solution containing the silicate.
