Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a stable silica sol with the growth of the particles exceeding a specified size in the coexistence of a salt by-product by adding alkaline silicate and acid gradually into a solution of alkali or an alkaline silicate with the reaction system maintained at a temperature higher than a prescribed level to reduce pH to a specified range.
CONSTITUTION: Alkaline silicate and acid such as sulfuric acid are added gradually into a solution of alkali such as NaOH or an inexpensive alkaline silicate such as grade 3 water glass (herein after called as repaired solution) with the reaction system maintained at a temperature high than 60°C to reduce pH of the system to the range of 8 to 11. A mixed liquid of alkaline silicate and acid with pH of 1 to 4 can be added to the repaired solution. Colloidal particles in the reaction system grows up to more than 7 mμ regardless of the existence of a salt by-product. The silica sol thus obtained is stable and easy of the post-treatment.
