Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture high purity sodium sulfate by adding a ferrous salt to an aqueous sodium sulfate soln. contg. heavy metals such as V to allow the metals to be adsorbed and adding a soluble Ca salt after adjusting the pH of the soln.
CONSTITUTION: When exhaust gas from the combustion of heavy oil or the like is desulfurized by passing through a caustic soda soln. to convert contained SO2 into Na2SO3, an aqueous sodium sulfate soln. contg. heavy metals such as V contained in the exhaust gas is prepared after the desulfurization. To the sodium sulfate soln. contg. heavy metals as impurities is added a ferrous salt such as ferrous sulfate, and the pH of the soln. is adjusted to ≤3.5 with a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid. After adjusting the pH to 5W7 with an alkali substance such as milk of lime, the soln. is held for 10min once, and milk of lime is further added to adjust the pH to ≥10. A Ca salt such as CaCl2 is then added to the soln. to form a precipitate based on iron hydroxide with V adsorbed and having superior settleability and filterability. By separating the precipitate by filtration, an aqueous sodium sulfate soln. of high purity is obtd., and high purity sodium sulfate is manufactured from the soln.
